Magie Cook

Born as Magdalena De La Cruz Cook Garcia, Magie grew up among 68 other children in an orphanage in Mexico. With no formal training, she taught herself how to play basketball and earned a spot on the Mexican National Team, only to have her dreams put on hold after a collarbone injury. Determined to create a better future, she later immigrated to the United States on a basketball scholarship at the University of Charleston.

While in college, Magie began making fresh salsa for friends, and word quickly spread. Professors and staff started requesting her salsa, unknowingly planting the seed for what would become her multi-million-dollar company.

After graduating, Magie faced extreme hardship, struggling to find a job and eventually becoming homeless. A turning point came when a friend entered her into a Fresh Salsa competition in West Virginia, which she won unanimously. With just $800, she launched Maggie’s All-Natural Fresh Salsas & Dips.

With no formal business training, Magie fearlessly cold-called grocery stores and expanded distribution nationwide. She mastered production, sales, consumer marketing, and team leadership, building a thriving company from the ground up. In 2015, at the peak of its success, her company was acquired alongside Garden Fresh by Campbell’s Soup for $231 million.

After selling her company, Magie returned to Mexico to give back to the orphanage where she grew up. As the U.S. Program Director of the Give New Life Orphanage, she focused on combatting human trafficking, leading a team that rescued 31 children from the Cartel and sex trade.
