Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger is the real-life inspiration behind the iconic 1993 film Rudy, one of the most beloved underdog stories in American sports history. Against every conceivable odd, he walked on to the Notre Dame football team and achieved his dream of taking the field in a game, a moment that has inspired millions to believe that anything is possible.

The Ultimate Underdog Story

Growing up as the third of 14 children in Joliet, Illinois, Ruettiger struggled with dyslexia and was told repeatedly that he was not smart enough or talented enough to play football at Notre Dame. After high school, he worked in a power plant and served in the U.S. Navy before enrolling at Holy Cross College and eventually earning admission to Notre Dame. Despite being only five feet six inches tall and 165 pounds, he earned a spot on the scout team through sheer determination and heart. In the final game of his senior season in 1975, he recorded the only sack of the game and was carried off the field by his teammates.

Turning Dreams Into Reality

Ruettiger is the author of Rudy: My Story and has become one of the most in-demand motivational speakers in America. His keynotes share the principles of perseverance, goal-setting, and relentless determination that defined his journey. He inspires audiences to overcome their own obstacles, refuse to accept limitations imposed by others, and pursue their dreams with the same never-quit attitude that turned an impossible dream into one of the greatest sports stories ever told.
