While talking with an associate at a recent event Mike mentioned “Bill Belichik’s dad was my football coach at the Naval Academy.” He went on to say that 12 year-old Bill used to come to team meetings with his dad, Steve, to watch game films. Bill was totally absorbed by the process of team preparation.
Mike Abrashoff’s connection to Belichick goes even deeper: the coach of the New England Patriots said in a 2004 interview for Sports Illustrated Mike’s book, It’s Your Ship, was his favorite book on leadership. Mike was deeply flattered and said, “Bill’s amazing because he takes players from everywhere and gets them to play together as a team, which has been my whole message.”
It’s not the first time Mike’s book was mentioned by respected figures from football as having bona fide leadership advice. NFL quarterback Carson Palmer told a Monday Night Football broadcast that he learned important leadership lessons from the book. And just last month college football coach P.J. Fleck called It’s Your Ship the most important book he’s read on leadership – he keeps two copies on a shelf in his office.
