Rocky Bleier is a Vietnam War veteran, four-time Super Bowl champion, and one of the most powerful comeback stories in American sports history. After suffering severe combat injuries that doctors said would end his football career, he fought his way back to become a starting running back on the Pittsburgh Steelers dynasty of the 1970s.

From the Battlefields of Vietnam to Four Super Bowl Rings

Bleier played college football at Notre Dame, where he won a national championship in 1966 and served as team captain. Drafted by the Steelers in 1968, he played one rookie season before being drafted into the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. While serving with the 196th Light Infantry Brigade, he was shot in the left thigh and hit by grenade shrapnel that destroyed part of his right foot. Doctors said he would never play again. A postcard from Steelers owner Art Rooney reading “Rock — the team’s not doing well. We need you” helped fuel his determination to return.

Bleier spent years fighting back onto the roster, eventually becoming Franco Harris’s lead blocker as the Steelers won four Super Bowls. He and Harris both surpassed 1,000 rushing yards in 1976. He earned the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for his military service.
